Leg Three - Defining Humankind’s Evolutionary Vision

Science is continually enhancing our understanding of the nature of our universe and the world we live in. Science is generating information to help us answer the deeper question that I believe has been central to human consciousness for over 300,000 years which is “what is the purpose of this gift called life?”.

Today the over 4000 religions on planet Earth each have a speculative answer to this question. I believe that the majority of these answers are similar to that communicated by Jesus of Nazareth who provided the foundation for the Christian religion. Jesus put this simply in the great commandment which is “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind and thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself”. Recently religious scholars have been trying to communicate to church members that the concept of God that Jesus shared was a God within each one of us. Jesus did not describe God as a judgmental father whose rules we need to follow but rather the spiritual force within each one of us that enables our ability to partner with others in building a kingdom on earth as it is in heaven.

I recognize that if one assembled all the books that have been written to interpret what Jesus really meant they would fill a football stadium. I would suggest that the key to the future of humankind is not in those books but is in the ability of each of us to embrace the message from Jesus, and other religious leaders, which is for us to be awake to the God within us and partner together to build a happy and healthy world for ourselves, our children and our planet.

Summary and Comment

Religious organizations have the mission to create a vision for the evolutionary purpose of human life which is often referred to as “Heaven on Earth.” Religious organizations are called to adapt their historic beliefs to agree with the accepted understandings of science.

Religious leaders need to grasp the essential teachings of the founders of religions and, in particular for the USA, Jesus, that the spirit of God resides within each one of us and find positive ways to embrace these teachings and facilitate the purpose of partnering together to build heaven on earth for all.

The Christian religion is based on the teachings of Jesus. As part of the Sermon on the Mount he provided the Beatitudes. The Beatitudes are a learning system which define the characteristics that are important for human beings to be loving, awake and partners in facilitating human evolution.

I consider it is important for each of us to understand and help develop the characteristics we need to be effective partners in building a happy, healthy and equitable future for humankind and our planet.
